A new AC system will cost you thousands of dollars, so it’s important to do your research before buying and installing one.

But while it’s important to choose the best design and model for your home – and find value within your budget – it’s even more important to choose the best installation company. The quality of the installation can affect how well your system works, how long it lasts and how much maintenance and repair is required throughout its life. Before hiring a contractor, check more than just the price they offer you. Here’s what you should look for.

1. Warranties in writing

Contractors can promise to give you the best service, but verbal agreements can only go so far. Look for an installation company that puts satisfaction and performance guarantees in writing. Make sure it includes written estimates of how much the installation will cost, scope of work documents that clearly define what will be included and change-order policies, which explain how the company will handle work outside of its checklist. For example, if they find an AC system component that needs to be replaced or a low level of refrigerant, the replacement order policy explains how those issues will be resolved.

Before you hire a contractor, you should clearly understand (and have it in writing) what equipment will be installed, how long it will take, the scope of work and what happens if performance issues arise.

“If you don’t have clearly written guarantees that support function, system, comfort and any issues you may have under warranty, then your entire investment is at risk,” said Steve Wade, senior director of operations and procurement at ARS. “That’s what we like to tell our buyers, our customers: You might find someone cheaper. In fact, there’s a good chance you’ll find someone somewhere cheaper than our company. But you’re going to risk all that investment.”

2. Manufacturer’s approval

It is important to make sure that the company you hire is authorized to sell, install and service the system you have purchased. Authorized companies have met certain standards and have been tested and trained to work with the manufacturer’s equipment. They may also have access to technical support directly on the product and product-specific information that will be needed during installation.

You can usually find an authorized company through the manufacturer’s site on the Internet. You can check the AC company website for badges, or ask them directly.

Remember that just because a company is accredited doesn’t mean it’s right for the job. There are many reputable manufacturers to choose from, so be sure to seek referrals from friends and family, and read reviews.

3. Manual J calculation method

An important part of choosing and installing an AC system is the calculation of the J load, which is a standard method developed Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) HVAC contractors can use to determine the right model for your home. Factors such as the length of your space, the number of windows and doors in your home, air leakage, the location facing your home and how many people live in the home are taken into account.

The method helps ensure that your HVAC system is the right size for efficient operation. Simply replacing equipment with a system of the same size or basing the size on the square footage of the area can result in short cycling systems and trouble keeping the area cool, as well as high utility costs.

If the installation company just does a quick tour to determine which AC model to go with, consider that a red flag. Ask them if they will do a J count before recommending the unit.

4. Performance guarantees

Most people know to look for mechanical warranties when buying new home appliances, but it’s important to ask about performance warranties. While a manufacturer’s warranty will cover equipment, a labor or labor warranty covers mistakes made during installation – and they’re important. Some lessons show that over 65% of residential HVAC systems are not properly installed.

Before working with an AC installation company, ask how long their labor warranty lasts and any other extended labor coverage options.

5. Post-installation support

Once your AC system is installed, you don’t want to be left hanging if problems arise. Look for a company that provides post-installation support such as commissioning testing to make sure the system is working properly and efficiently, which is a quality assurance process.

You should also ask about maintenance plans – and what you need to do yourself, such as changing air filters – and whether the company offers emergency assistance. You can also ask about their warranty services to be prepared if your AC breaks down.
