What does it take to work in life sciences employment in 2026?

Sinéad Cullen of Life Science Recruitment discusses the changing landscape of life science recruitment and the opportunities you can create for yourself.

Some people know from a very young age what path they want their life to take professionally. But for many, perhaps even most, minds change over time and it may be as far as your education or career before you have a firm idea of ​​where you’d like to end up.

Sinéad Cullen, director of Life Science Recruitment – a member of the Vertical Markets Group – started with an undergraduate degree and a master’s in neuroscience, obtained from University College Cork and Trinity College Dublin respectively.

During that time he was actively involved in many science outreach programmes, competitions and programmes, including ‘I’m a Scientist Get Out Here’, where he won funding to run his own workshop out of the Biomedical Diagnostics Institute at Dublin City University.

However, while the work was rewarding, especially the workshops that helped him share his knowledge with the next generation of scientists through workshops, he soon realized that he had a different career future.

Cullen told SiliconRepublic.com: “I really decided that the lab wasn’t my place. I enjoy communicating on the scientific side of things, but I wanted to find a role that I could do long-term and I researched what was available and got hired.”

For Cullen, it would be beneficial to keep a close eye on how the work is progressing and if an opportunity arises to call – even if it has never been considered before – give it the thought it deserves.

“It can help you know what you like and what you don’t like and you will never consider it a waste of time,” she said. “If I hadn’t spent those two and a half years in the lab, I wouldn’t have been able to decide what I wanted and what I didn’t want.”

Science, he finds, is the perfect place for a student or professional to explore different opportunities and find career paths they may not have known about.

He said: “Even myself, before I started recruiting, I didn’t know all the different roles that were in the life sciences, so I would have thought that most of them were lab-based, but there are a lot of roles in the life sciences where you would be in an office.

Practice makes perfect

And as the landscape changes, so do the expectations of professionals who want to work in life science recruiting. Cullen found that the environment has changed a lot since he started, primarily due to technological innovations.

He explained that AI, machine learning and bioinformatics, among other developments, have pushed the life sciences into technology and adjacent areas, resulting in a world in need of a diverse skill set.

Cullen said: “So I think the landscape has changed a lot in terms of people being more agile in their role and adapting to their role, to that new technology. finding the right people who can adapt and learn on the job and work in those new environments.”

Communication is also key, as often people with a strong background in complex science need to transfer knowledge to someone who has no basic or industry knowledge of the subject, or who may be in the right, albeit non-scientific, group.

For health science professionals in particular, employers Cullen noted that they currently prioritize applicants who demonstrate attention to detail, problem-solving skills, advanced scientific writing skills and good communication skills. This is especially true when dealing with external stakeholders, governing bodies and team members close to the department.

Challenge or opportunity?

One person’s challenge is often another person’s opportunity and certainly, within the life sciences ecosystem, challenge and opportunity can be synonymous to a right-minded person. While some employers may view the competitive job market as a challenge to overcome, it also creates opportunities.

Cullen explained: “One of the biggest challenges in life sciences recruitment is that very competitive marketso there is a war for talent as it is. I think that has been there for a long time in this space that there are more jobs than qualified people.”

The good news, however, is that hiring remains strong in specialty areas that require people with niche skills, such as quality assurance, regulatory affairs, clinical operations, supply chain and technical engineering.

“We see that recruitment processes are taking longer and employers are more selective, so the demand for skilled workers in all those areas remains very high. It’s a good sign for the rest of 2026, the outlook looks good.”
